SUCCESS OF CEÒLMHOR PROJECT
A new small-scale project, Ceòlmhor, has been delighting young learners and educators alike in selected nursery and early-level classes across the Broad Bay area of Lewis. Designed to develop Gaelic vocabulary through singing, props, and actions, the project offered an enjoyable and motivating way for the youngest learners to engage with the language.
Led by Gold Medal finalist and teacher Kirsty Watt, the sessions quickly became a weekly highlight, with both children and adults eager to see what exciting activities Kirsty would bring next.
Kirsty shared her enthusiasm for the project:
“It’s been an absolute joy working with these young learners. Seeing their confidence grow each week as they learned new Gaelic words through songs and actions was incredibly rewarding. The energy and enthusiasm they brought to every session made the experience so special for me.”
The project has been praised not only for its fun and engaging approach but also for its clear Gaelic language outcomes. Early feedback shows that children are developing confidence in using Gaelic during play, a crucial step in strengthening language skills at an early age.

“This project has been invaluable in helping our young learners develop Gaelic vocabulary in such an enjoyable way. Kirsty’s sessions combined music, movement, and storytelling, which really captured the children’s imaginations and made learning feel like play. The confidence the children now show when using Gaelic is very encouraging, and projects like this are key to increasing the number of Gaelic speakers as they move through their educational journey.”

Os cionn na seiseanan bha Ciorstaidh Watt, seinneadair agus tidsear. Ann an ùine gu math goirid bha fadachd air a’ chloinn pàirt a ghabhail sna seiseanan le clann agus inbhich ag iarraidh faicinn dè an ath rud inntinneach a bhiodh Ciorstaidh a’ taisbeanadh dhaibh.
Thuirt Ciorstaidh:
“Tha e air a bhith na thlachd dhomh a bhith ag obair leis an luchd-ionnsachaidh òg seo. Bha e na thoileachas mòr a bhith a’ faicinn am misneachd a’ fàs gach seachdain agus iad ag ionnsachadh faclan ùra Gàidhlig tro òrain is gnìomhan. Bha na sgoilearan cho deònach pàirt a ghabhail agus bha thu a’ faicinn, gu soilleir, gu robh a’ chùis a’ còrdadh riutha glan”.
Tha am pròiseact air a mholadh chan ann a-mhàin airson a dhòigh-obrach spòrsail agus tarraingeach ach cuideachd airson a bhuilean soilleir sa Ghàidhlig. Tha dearbhadh ann gu bheil an fheadhainn bheaga a’ togail misneachd ann a bhith a’ cleachdadh na Gàidhlig nas trice agus ann an dòigh nàdarrach.
Thuirt Nadine Mhoireach, Manaidsear Sgoil Àraich an Rubha:
“Tha am pròiseact seo air a bhith air leth feumail ann a bhith a’ cuideachadh ar luchd-ionnsachaidh òga briathrachas Gàidhlig a leasachadh ann an dòigh cho tlachdmhor. Bha seiseanan Ciorstaidh a’ tighinn còmhla ri ceòl, gluasad, agus aithris sgeulachdan, a ghlac mac-meanmna na cloinne gu mòr. Tha pròiseactan mar seo fìor chudromach airson àireamh luchd-labhairt na Gàidhlig àrdachadh agus iad a’ gluasad air adhart air an t-slighe foghlaim.”
